Commissioning a Digital Portrait

You may have seen my portrait drawings on RedditGetsDrawn where I draw and paint as user grumpycorgi, if you are interested in those you have come to the right place!

Start by reading this entire section, it outlines all the details that you may need to know about commissioning a digital painting.  You can then send me a digital reference photo at with the indication that you are interested in a Digital Painting. Also please include details about what is wanted, such as color choices, backgrounds etc. (basically anything that will make the process more satisfactory for both of us).

The Digital Portrait

Digital Paintings are painted digitally on a computer using painting program and a graphics tablet and pen. In my case I work in Photoshop on a Surface Pro 3. Though digital art can be created using a variety of tools and filters and photos, actual digital painting is done using the same techniques that is used in traditional art - simulating brushes, paint, and pencils – no paintovers or filters here.

My digital paintings are for non-commercial use, meaning personal use only. They created at a high resolution, so that they can be printed up to 11×14 inches in size (and possibly higher) at 300dpi. You will receive a digital file around 4000 pixels in the long dimension. I will also include a smaller photo for web use if requested.

Choosing a Reference

In order for me to paint your portrait, I will need a good quality photo of the subject’s face and shoulders.

  • I need to be able to make out the details, so blurry, grainy, or badly lit photos will probably not work.

  • Try to pick a photo that shows the subject’s entire head, especially the hairline.
  • Anything run through Instagram filters is probably not good enough quality. If in doubt, please feel free to ask first.
  • You may send me several options of photos I can refer to.

Digital Paintings start at - $75 for one subject and minimal background.

A second subject in the same painting or a detailed background is $35 extra. Each additional subject beyond that is $35.

Portrait rates are subject to change. The current price for your portrait at the time of payment will be applied to your commission.

Please note that I have the right to refuse a request based on subject matter or it being overly complex. In such a case I will refund completely if a payment has already been made.

Making Payment and Receiving your Digital Painting File

In order to reserve a place on my wait list, your payment must be made in full. Portrait payments are non-refundable. However, If, under any circumstances, the portrait cannot be completed or fulfilled by any fault of mine, a full refund will be issued.

Payments can be via PayPal, personal check, cashier's check, money order, credit card and cash.

The turnaround time will vary depending on how many commissions I have lined up at the time. I will do my best to complete each commission within two weeks’ time. If I find that it will take longer, I will let you know. If you would like your commission to be moved to the front of my list, this will incur an additional fee and be subject to a first come, first serve policy.

After completion if there is something not to your satisfaction I will do one minor adjustment to fix it. I will not redo the entire painting or do multiple fixes. Those will cost extra.

When complete you will be provided with a link to download your full resolution jpeg file. The file will be roughly 11x14 inches at 300 dpi. This file is provided for personal use only and is not licensed for commercial use.

I reserve the right to images of the original artwork. I retain the right to use the painting on my website and in my portfolio. You are granted permission to make unlimited copies and prints (on your own, not through me) of your painting without any extra fees.

I will not sell your image to anyone else unless we specifically agree in writing that I can.

You may not represent my work as your own work or remove my signature from it.

You may not resell my work in digital or print form. If you want a painting to resell, this will require an additional fee.

I was intrigued when I saw what a fun affect a digital version of a photo could have. It’s very unique and creative. It’s a great option for a favorite photo. I made a Christmas card from one of mine.
